What Makes UDI U818A the ideal Drone?

Ready for Take-off

The UDI U818A is ready for flight as soon as you open the package. The rotors are already in place and there is little preparation needed. You’ll just have to check the battery level of both the remote and the drone itself. Make sure that there are four AA batteries for the remote and the battery for the drone is in place.

The UDI U818A Drone has a minimalistic design in jet black with the logo of UDI in the middle. From afar, it would actually look like a UFO and Sci-fi fans would appreciate this design even more! This drone is light and weights only 15.3 grams. It can be quite flimsy to the touch as the entirety of this drone is made out of thin plastic. But don’t fret! This will help absorb impact better and save weight.

The rotors, two of which are black and two white, are surrounded by the black propeller guards making it safe from tangling onto objects from its side. They are durable and can even withstand pressure or twisting which makes it ideal even when you have children around. There are also colorful LED lights that you can turn on by simply pressing the button on the shoulders of the remote. There are LED lights that can be turned on when you have the headless mode turned off. There are also blue (for the front) and red (for the back) LED lights to assist you with as a point of reference. This is ideal for drone users who want to fly during night time.

Remote Controller

Of course, this drone won’t be complete without its remote control. The remote has a simple design and is made out of plastic material. It comfortably sits well in your hand and doesn’t easily slip. It features a lot of buttons and switches to help you navigate the UDI U818A like a pro. There are two buttons on the shoulders of the remote for turning the LED lights on or off and for putting the drone in stunt mode. The two control sticks on the top left are for thrust and direction, and right for forward/ backwards and left/right similar to usual layouts.

There is also the LCD display that shows information like the battery level, throttle, and signal. Surrounding this display are 4 more buttons. On its left are the buttons for taking photos and videos, and on the right are for changing the flight mode and for using the 360° eversion feature.

A 2.4-GHz radio signal is used to let the remote controller and the U818A drone communicate. It is very much similar to the frequency band of Wi-Fi networks but don’t worry because you won’t experience any interference from these networks. You can also enjoy controlling the quadcopter for over 100 meters. However, only this remote can control the device and can’t be controlled by Wi-Fi devices such as a smartphone.

Flight Time

The ideal flight time for the UDI U818A is 7-9 minutes with its 500 mAh batteries fully charged. For drones as cheap as this, it is quite average. The batteries take up to 60 to 120 minutes to recharge and can be quite long for such a small battery. Some users opt to purchase another set of batteries which can increase flight time up to 15 to 20 minutes.

Another note is that you have to pay attention to the battery level since it won’t give you a warning when it runs out. It will simply decrease the lifting power of your quadcopter causing it to fall out of the sky.

Ease of Use

This drone relies on the skills of the person holding the remote. For first time users, it is best to fly this drone in an open area free of obstacles and with mild to moderate wind. This drone is light weight and can lose its stability if the wind is too strong. Practice with hovering and especially landing until you get the hang of flying this drone. Mode 1 (Low) and Mode 2 (High) are the two-speed modes available.

The forward-facing camera is placed on the bottom of the UDI U818A and is very small. Images are captured at 1280 x 960-pixel resolution. It is acceptable especially if there are enough lighting and minimal movement from the drone. However, it can make the photos blur since it doesn’t feature stabilisation technology and may pick up movements. The videos are shot at 640 x 480 pixels at 30 frames per second. It can be hazy especially if there is too much light and may make the video unwatchable. Another note is that the camera only records video and not audio. It isn’t as high quality as the other drones out in the market but is reasonable enough given its affordable price.

It can be manipulated using the two buttons on the left side of the LCD display in the remote controller. Simply press the top button once for taking photos, and press the bottom button once to take videos and press again to stop recording. It doesn’t feature a live feed of the camera but it is very easy to view the photos and videos you took. Using the USB cord provided, you just plug it in the camera and connect it to a computer. These files are saved in Motion JPEG format which can be compatible with most devices.

UDI U818A is very durable and can stand up to a few falls and crashes which makes it all the more ideal for beginners. The box contains 4 spare propellers and even included a screwdriver. There are also available spare batteries available in the market that are very affordable and can greatly increase the flight time. You can also opt to remove its propeller guards which can make it run faster.

Other Notable Features

One of the awesome features of the UDI U818A is its 360° eversion manoeuvre. This quadcopter can do a flip in the air, taking into account that it is at least 10 to 15 feet altitude, once you hit the 360° button in the remote but prepare for the throttle right after. Another feature of this drone is its 6 gyroscopes for stabilisation. UDI made sure that this drone will be stable enough in gusts of wind given its very light structure.
